The valve guide is a critical guiding component in an automotive engine, ensuring the precise linear reciprocating motion of the valve. It facilitates proper alignment between the valve and its seat, while also transferring heat from the valve stem to the cylinder head.
Valve Guide Removal Procedure:
- Use a specialized tool to press out the valve guide. For flanged guides, press from the combustion chamber side.
- Inspect the guide bore, valve seat ring bore, and spark plug thread holes for cracks.
- Cracks <0.5 mm: The cylinder head remains serviceable without impacting lifespan.
- Cracks ≥0.5 mm: Cylinder head replacement is mandatory.
Installation Guidelines:
- Apply engine oil to the outer surface of the new valve guide.
- Using a dedicated tool, press the guide into the cylinder head from the camshaft side (no heating required).
- For flanged guides: Do not exceed 10 kN pressing force to avoid flange fracture.
- For non-flanged guides: Ensure the exposed length matches the flange length of flanged guides post-installation.
Reaming & Finishing:
- Ream the guide bore with a valve guide reamer to achieve proper clearance with the valve stem (typically minimal clearance is required).
- Select the reamer diameter based on the valve stem specifications.
- Maintain light feed pressure; keep the reamer level and ensure smooth operation for optimal fit.
